A backup of the information typically means taking a copy of the data stored on the computers disk drive. A backup of data is required and is taken by every computer user at regular intervals. Online backups are a kind of backups which are taken simultaneously when the data is being entered in the server. Online backups save the system downtime and hence result in greater profits to companies.

Backups can be offline or online. They can also be classified as remote and offsite. Backups are required to maintain data integrity. Backups reduce the turn sound time for a company. The turnaround time is the time taken to recover files once they are wipes off a database. The turnaround time is a major source of worry to many companies. Companies have been known to lose out on many clients because they could not control their turn around time.

It is the backup which helps in controlling turnaround time. Back up typically means taking a copy which will be useful in the future should something go very wrong with the database .A backup can be taken on various media. The many media of back up taking are floppy disk drives, compact disk drives, digital video drives, hard drives, usb flash drives, magnetic tapes etc. Back up once taken can b stored safely. These databases which specialize in storing the backed up data are known as backup data ware houses.
